June 28 Smiling at you . . .June 26 Thank you all. . .I appreciate you for stopping by and saying hi, even though I haven't been able to visit much at all these past months with the Tender Graces novel coming out, then immediately beginning work on Book2. The work on the Vkbook2 is coming along well - almost 80,000 words and I want at least 95,000 before I start the "real editing." Right now, I'm getting the story down - I have a good "frame" and am filling in, deleting, adding - whatever.
I'm on twitter if any of you do that. I have a facebook, too - if any of you have that . . . stop and see me! I resisted those places at first when I was "invited" by people to be involved, but, I do see the appeal of going in and having 140 words or so to say something and to read something that quickly *smiling*
Amazon has Tender Graces on Kindle and the funny thing is, I've never even seen a Kindle! haw! I want to see one somewhere so I can see what it looks like. I doubt I'd ever read a novel on a device, but I'm curious about it. Anyone have one? What is the experience like? Do you really read an entire novel on a handheld device?
My reviews are still good and I am humbled and amazed and happy. I've had two people say they called in sick to finish my book - what a compliment! This experience is wonderful - the reaching out of readers. It's a stressful thing sometimes, having a book published - a different stress from trying to be published, and these good words about my words fill me up...thank you.
Now, go do the day! I am going to come visit on Sundays. That's what I decided I would try to do. Until the second book is sent off, I have to concentrate there, but I think Sundays would be a good day to come a-calling....
June 19 End Mountaintop Removal!June 16 VK book 2 coming along nicely & Friend Lisa Mannetti Wins Bran Stroker Award! YAY!The work on VK book 2 is going well - I have almost 70,000 words. I'm quite happy with at least 50,000 of those *laughing* But, I know what I must do - keep writing, get all the words down, and there will be time to fiddle with it and rearrange and delete and replace and rewrite. After all, I deleted 30,000 words that I'd written back before Tender Graces was published, when I'd written the original 200,000 words that would be come TG and "The Draft of Book 2" - actually, more than 30,000 words have been deleted. You must be fearless when you write . . . if it's not right, it's just not right - delete and write more, there's always more words - always!
I want to tell you all that a good friend of mine just won the Bram Stroker award for first time author for her novel The Gentling Box - I am so proud of her. Her writing is unique and lush and beautiful. Even though this is not my usual genre to read, and I admittedly had to close both eyes and not read parts of her novel *laughing* I appreciated the skill she has as a writer - beautiful language. CONGRATULATIONS LISA MANNETTI! Lisa is the short little one with the print dress...*smiling*

Here are the links:
May 17 Tender Graces is in the Asheville Citizen Times - *smiling*Tender Graces and BelleBooks is in the Asheville Citizen Times -- a review of Tender Graces by Rob Neufeld, and as well a profile on BelleBooks publishers. *smiling*
And, to boot, Asheville is on CBS Sunday Morning - so Charles Osgood is talking up our Asheville area....he recorded at the Biltmore.
I'm happy that another indie bookstore has added Tender Graces to its shelves. Octavia Books in New Orleans now has Tender Graces. You see, an authors books do not necessarily end up automatically in bookstores - especially unknown authors as I am, and especially writers of "general" or "literary" or "women's" or "southern" or "non-genre" fiction....we have to prove ourselves before bookstores will consider taking a chance on ordering our books. It is a business, after all. And with online booksales growing, Kindle (which TG is on Kindle -something I've never even personally seen!), and the economy, it's a difficult time for booksellers, publishers, and thus authors! So, thank you Octavia Booksellers!
Well, whatever the case, this morning the TG review and image of the book is splashed across the newspaper in the arts and entertainment section and I am happy! *Big Smile*
(I do post pretty regularly on the Tender Graces blog - *smiling* but I so appreciate those of you who come by here and see me at my first blog home)
Thank you all for stopping by and I'll see you soon - I'm working furiously on the second VK book.
May 10 Mountaintop Removal...A form of coal mining --entire mountains are dynamited -- more than 470 mountains already destroyed.
Help end Mountaintop Removal May 05 The mountains are alive, with the sound of typing! (teehee)"I am happy, and that thought slams against me." -- virginia kate
me, too Virginia Kate. me, too.
Furiously at work on VKBook2. I hope all of you are well.
Thank you for the Tender Grace kudos on Amazon - on Blogs - your emails - your comments- I am appreciative.
And now - as never before seen except in the most darkest of corners of a drawer, or inside a box of mementos (at the bottom), or turned upside down and ever-which-a-way in a photo album.....the person who inspired Virginia Kate's Grandmother Laudine, or Mee Maw as she called herself. Yes, this is the woman who inspired the Mee Maw character in Tender Graces....who is she? Well....who was she is more the answer...This woman gave me the idea for Mee Maw Laudine just by being who she was....my brother Tommy found this photo and we laugh every time we look at it. This is such a telling photo. She would have been so mad at me for posting her before she was "fixed up" - without her nice wig and whatevers. Just as Virginia Kate's Mee Maw Laudine would be fussin' up a big black storm, too, for being shown whilst not "fixed up."
April 28 Guest Blogging at J. Kaye's Book BlogI am honored to have been asked to guest blog at J. Kaye's Book Blog. First, in and on the book there are "blurbs (praises)" from authors - check out their books as well, for they are excellent writers. To see those, visit the Tender Graces blog where I have them displayed for now, or kathrynmagendie.com TG page. These authors took time to read and write up such nice things about TG....makes me smile.
Bloggers and on-line reviewers--Thank You!
And then Amazon Reviews (so far!)
I hope I haven't missed anyone....all these words about Tender Graces mean so much to me; I appreciate you all!
PS -- and if you are getting SICK of hearing me go WHOOHOOO about Tender Graces (laughing)- I will post something else sooner or later *laughing* - I can't help it; I'm just excited! :)
April 18 Oh, what a wonderful night! The book signing party at Osondu Bookseller was a success! I am so humbled and happy.
I had a Huge surprise, too....one of our own bloggers - the beautiful vivacious sparkling eyed Kathleen of Katsoup came to the signing! Bless her, and her husband, drove from Georgia to attend. I was astounded and overwhelmed with gratitude!
I posted some photos on facebook and on the Tender Graces blog. Below is the photo of Kathleen and I - *smiling*
I couldn't be happier - I can't tell how many attended, but I was pleased and happy with the response. Some came early and had to leave, some came later after the champagne toast, some stayed the whole time - but it was such a blur of excitement, I just know that my friends were there, that there were more people that I imagined (I had told Good Man Roger: "please, just let there be at least 10 people there...." well, there were more than 10 people there *laughing*
I woke up this morning with a big smile on my tired but happy face. No matter what happens from here on out, I have reached my goal: I wanted to see my book published, I wanted to have a first signing party, I wanted to sign my book for beautiful friends, I wanted my family to have my book -- all done. Everything else is just icing on a big beautiful cake - which I'm also posting a photo of Christy L. Bishop's cake - she's chef/owner of Sugar Buzz and this cake was so GORGEOUS!
Ha! I have pen in hand! *smiling* Look at Kathleen's sparking eyes (and can I please have that beautiful blond hair!)
April 16 THEY HAVE ARRIVED....AND ARE ARRIVING!OH! my copies of Tender Graces have arrived --- and I'm getting calls and emails from others who are receiving theirs. I am fit to be tied I am so excited. They are BEAUTIFUL!
I keep thinking about my "journey" here -- how I've talked about this; dreamed about this; worried over this; angsted, cried, laughed, railed, resigned myself, hoped again....and finally, finally, finally....I have my book on my shelf...and others will have it on their shelves...hold my words. I am so overcome with emotion right now!
On my shelf - I'd had a fake book there to visualize it - we'd made a fake cover (smiling), then when I signed the contract with BelleBooks, I took out the fake book and left the space there. Now...it is filled.....(and hey -how funny that I am between authors David Madden and Adnan Mahmutovic - two people I respect and admire and personally know! David Madden is a playwright, author, poet, teacher and I adore him; and Adnan Mahmutovic is a gifted, beautiful writer who just released ILLEGITIMATE from Cantarabooks - the book on the shelf is [REFUGE]E. *big smile*)
April 12 Tender Graces....Tomorrow....and first signing on Friday! The time has finally arrived. I am both excited and terrified. Shipments of Tender Graces begin to go out tomorrow, so anyone who has pre-ordered should receive their copy next week. I hope you asked for a signed bookplate -- I tried to make them as personal as I could and not just sign my name. If you get one without a signed bookplate and want one, just email me (that is, unless somehow I will be in your area or you in mine and I sign it personally; wouldn't that be fun!). If you have pre-ordered: thank you; I appreciate you. If you didn't or couldn't, that is okay, too --- not everyone out there has to buy my book *laughing* -- but, wouldn't it be grand if everyone did ...Ha! *laughing*
This Friday the 17th from 7-9PM is my first signing to be held at Osondu Booksellers. It's a "reception" by reservation where we'll have champagne and some party foods. I get so nervous that I'll show up and no one will be there, or the books will be messed up in some way -- I dream about it and it's all a bit funny in its own way.
I am in touch with some other bookstores and book festivals and libraries. I'm not doing a huge grand tour all over the place, first time unknown authors rarely do that (actually, hardly any authors, even well-known ones, do book signing tours any longer). However, I am going to do them where I can, and as well, I hope to visit book clubs where I can, too. I'm hoping to donate to libraries where I can, too. Let's support our libraries! They need us! Our indie booksellers need us, too.
What I can only hope for is that people read my book and love it and email me to tell me so. To tell me their favorite character(s) or scene(s); to tell me what something meant to them or to ask me if something is one of my secret nuggets (teehee).
I just finished an interview with a local publication and that will be exciting to see! The reviews are starting to come in and so far so good on those. The wheels are turning turning turning.
yes, it is happening....I am humbled and filled with gratitude (mixed with that terrified anxious feeling!)
This photo below makes me laugh -- both Good Man Roger and I covering our faces at the same time the camera snapped our image! It was taken at a theater party, thus the froo froo on my collar and sleeves (teehee) ... Happy Day to you all --
March 31 VOTE FOR ANGIE!!!! And my space surroundingsY'all - take just a moment to go vote for my good friend Angie Ledbetter! She's neck and neck for first place at blog interviewer. She's a wonderful person and does so much for others. I'd appreciate it--all you do is click on the thumbs up!:
As per Kat Soup's request *grin*, here is what my space and things around me look like right now (tender graces manuscript pages on the floor, contact info on the table, along with books I am going to review, dog sleeping, books, "wolfs-head" arrowhead necklace by me as I write, black coffee, etc etc etc....
March 30 My "blurbs" for Tender Graces and an early review ....Praise for Tender Graces:Kathryn Magendie's TENDER GRACES leaves a ghostly trail of broken hearts from by-God West Virginia to Texas to the shimmering seasons of Louisiana where real love and an unexpected home is found for a lost child. Reminiscent of early Lee Smith and Silas House, Magendie's Virginia Kate Carey is the steady beating pulse of this beautiful narrative that sweeps through a lifetime of loss, grief, and ultimately redemption and what it means to go home again. – Kerry Madden, author of the Maggie Valley Trilogy
Kathryn Magendie's TENDER GRACES is a powerful, moving and beautifully written debut. With rich detail, vivid imagery and finely drawn characters who leap off the page, drag you into their lives and make you root for them, this book will command your attention all the way to the final page...and leave you wishing for more.--Danielle Younge-Ullman, author of Falling Under Kat Magendie's TENDER GRACES is a thoroughly enjoyable, big, family saga. Filled with rich language, and down-home wisdom, Kat's tale will leave you charmed, seduced, and fully satisfied by a cast of offbeat, lovable characters. Don't miss this one! Barbara Quinn, author of 36C, Slings and Arrows, The Speed of Dark, and Publisher/Managing Editor, The Rose & Thorn Ezine It was my wonderfully good fortune to meet fellow writer Kathryn Magendie. She has what it takes and reminds me of a Barbara Kingsolver or Anne Tyler. The way Kathryn Magendie writes is the way writing is supposed to be done - it pulls out everything - feelings, emotions, laughter, tears, and truths. Her work made me laugh, cry, think, and marvel at her choice of wording and description. Susan Reinhardt, Author of Not Tonight Honey--Wait 'til I'm a size 6, Don't Sleep With A Bubba: Unless Your Eggs Are In Wheelchairs, and Dishing With the Kitchen Virgin Every so often, if you're fortunate enough, you'll find a book that not only captures your attention and imagination, it captures your heart. Kathryn Magendie's characters are so vivid and memorable, and the story so poignant, one hates for TENDER GRACES to end. The voice of the West Virginia mountains holds true in every aspect of Magendie's work, which leaves one begging for more and wondering where this gifted writer has been hiding all these years! Deborah LeBlanc, Author of Family Inheritance, Grave Intent, A House Divided, Morbid Curiosity, and Water Witch Kathryn Magendie has a magical way with words. They bubble out unchecked onto the page to cascade over readers like a cool mountain waterfall. But those words in "TENDER GRACES" don't just flow prettily; there are scenes and chapters so poignant or devastating, readers will be swept away and left wanting for oxygen. Besides the absorbing plot and characters, Magendie's unique fresh voice and lyrical turns of phrase are gifts she gives to readers, and which last long after the last page is read. Powerful stuff for a debut novel. Angie Ledbetter, Author of Seeds of Faith Kathryn Magendie’s style—and for me style is everything, character, setting the fictive experience—is immediately arresting, engaging, and flows with the reader in its embrace through all the episodes, moving from humor, to lyricism, to melancholy, to pathos. Readers will hear about the voice in TENDER GRACES and rush out to buy and listen to that voice, familiar and yet with tonalities not yeat heard, igniting delight never before quite felt. David Madden, Novelist, Playwright, Teacher TENDER GRACES is a novel that reads like a poem to childhood and growing up. -Ed Cullen, author of Letter in a Woodpile, features writer for the Baton Rouge Morning Advocate and a frequent contributor to All Things Considered on National Public Radio Kathryn’s prose is poignant, tangy, sweet, loving, wanting, needing and so satisfying! -Diane Buccheri, Publisher, OCEAN Magazine In her debut novel, TENDER GRACES, Kathryn Magendie stitches together the story of a family, which, like a quilt, is worn in places and frayed at the edges, but is so true and warm you'll want to wrap yourself up in its pages and be pulled into its comfort. This is a book you'll want to read slowly and savor. -Judy Merrill Larsen, author of All the Numbers. Poignant, heart wrenching, heartwarming, haunting. When I finished the book, I dreamed of it; TENDER GRACES stays with you. The cover of the review copy uses the phrase “gentle yet unflinching. A perfect phrase for this coming of age Southern novel. I can see, feel, smell the settings in West Virginia…they are wonderful. Since I live in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Kathryn Magendie captures the “southernness” of Baton Rouge. [Tender Graces] makes my heart weep with sorrow and joy. --Mary Laird, MLIS, Library Consortium Analyst, LOUIS: The Louisiana Library Network March 25 Signing party, books, reviews, newsletter ...I best get crackin' my own whip!Oh, it's really close y'all....mere weeks....before the book has gone to print.
Bellebooks has said I am getting pre-orders daily, so that's good! *smiling* Thank you everyone.
And, I have my first signing party! Osondu Booksellers is sponsoring a booksigning party at the bookstore on April 17, 7-9 pm. It's reservation only, and she'll have champagne, and there will be food! If you are in the Waynesville, NC area and want to be there, please call Osondu Booksellers and reserve a spot! I think it would be mightily cool if I could meet blogger friends there.
Right now, I'm done with the galley proof and have seen the final cover images (!!oh!!). I'm working on the Rose & Thorn newsletter. Also working on some book reviews: Kerry Madden's children's books: Gentle's Holler, Louisiana's Song, and Jessie's Mountain -- good books for kids and my first time to review children's books. They'll go on the R&T MySpace page. Now I'm reading Angela Dove's No Room For Doubt and I'll be reviewing that one next.
I just ordered "The Unbreakable Child" by Kim Richardson....and The Green Guide to Daily Living by Megan Roth -
What are you reading? (I hope one day you answer that question with "Tender Graces!" *grin*)
March 20 Interview by blogger Brian Mongold of Eazy CheezyDang, I feel all special or something! (laughing) - but, what fun this was, fun in an "I'm embarrassed and bashful" kind of way. One thing I'm learning in this process is how one can't be shy, one can't go round hiding - you have to "tout" yourself and that is the hardest part for me! The writing is the easy part, the editing and re-writing a bit easier, the finding of publisher is DANG HARD, but, having to tell people about yourself, and having to say "buy my book! go to these links! read this review! read this interview! do this and that and me m em em ememememmemem ME!" ---now, that's the hard hard hard uncomfortable at time part!
Here's the interview between Brian and me ... (and yes, that's proper grammar *laugh*) |
